Introduction
St. Moritz, Sankt Moritz in German and San Maurizio in Italian, is a glitzy, lakeside alpine resort town in the celebrated Engadin Valley of Switzerland, with huge notoriety as the playground of the rich and famous. To be sure, it is the domain of celebrities and fashion hounds, with designer boutiques dotting its terraced streets, interspersed with chocolatiers, gourmet restaurants, and posh hotels. This is actually the priciest and most exclusive resort in the Alps, where high-end shopping and lavish social happenings are the order of the day, and where sailing regattas are held on Lake St. Moritz in the summertime and polo matches on the frozen lake in winter – yes, on horseback!. Twice St. Moritz has hosted the Winter Olympic Games, in 1928 and 1948, and three times the Alpine Skiing World Championships. There's also a fantastic network of walking trails in the area, and a couple of dozen lakes scattered around.
Location
St. Moritz is situated in the southeast corner of Switzerland, close to the border of Italy, in the fabulous Alpine region of Graubünden (or Grisons). It sits at an elevation of 5,978 feet (1,822 m), surrounded by lofty mountain peaks that hover around 13,000 feet (4,000 m), earning for itself the moniker, "Rooftop of Europe." The town is approximately equidistant from Zürich and Milan, Italy, some 200 km from either, south of Zürich and north of Milan.
